Using Computers to Explore the Future
While at Renaissance Planning, Vlad led the application of CorPlan, a computer model that tested the impacts of regional population and employment shifts to the comprehensive plan for Chesterfield County Virginia, with the population of 330,000. While at EPR, Vlad lead a more ambitious effort using the proprietary land use software called community viz add a regional scale to model land use for the 15 jurisdictions in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia. Most recently he has been part of a team using an integrated suite of 11 computer models to explore the impacts of alternate futures in the Richmond region.
Always working with top technical experts in GIS, computer modeling and transportation planning, Vlad has usually focused on the big picture architecture of the scenario planning efforts. He has helped mobilize technical teams, each working in their areas of expertise, to explore the regional impacts of trends such as sea level rise and climate change, demographic shifts and economic industry change and new settlement patterns. He has also consulted on how to interpret the results of performance outputs and translate them into meaningful policy direction for local and regional governments.
